To Help Just One Person

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed
but I try to work one day at a time.
If we just worry about the big picture,
we are powerless.
So my secret is to start right away doing
whatever little work I can do.
I try to give joy to one person in the morning,
and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon.
That’s enough.
When you see you can do that, you continue,
and you give two little joys,
and you remove two little sufferings,
then three, and then four.

If you and your friends do not despise the small work,
a million people will remove a lot of suffering.
That is the secret. Start right now.

May We Always Be Merciful

We ask, O God, for the grace
to be our best selves.
We ask for the vision
to be builders of the human community
rather than its destroyers.
We ask for the humility as a people
to understand the fears and hopes of other peoples.

We ask for the love it takes
to bequeath to the children of the world to come
more than the failures of our own making.
We ask for the heart it takes
to care for all the peoples
of Afghanistan and Iraq, of Palestine and Israel
as well as for ourselves.

Give us the depth of soul, O God,
to constrain our might,

to resist the temptations of power
to refuse to attack the attackable,
to understand
that vengeance begets violence,
and to bring peace—not war—wherever we go.

For You, O God, have been merciful to us.
For You, O God, have been patient with us.
For You, O God, have been gracious to us.

And so may we be merciful
and patient
and gracious
and trusting
with these others whom you also love

This we ask through Jesus,
the one without vengeance in his heart.
This we ask forever and ever. Amen.

When the storms of life are strong
When you’re wounded, when you don’t belong

When you no longer hear my song
My blessing goes with you

O God, may I find and praise your goodness dwelling within every human being. May I be a living sign of your generous love and help everyone to live more intimately with you. May we respect the evolving nature of all creation and grow to our fullness of life with you. Guide our search into our entire human nature, and into all creation, to know what you want us to do.

Each One, Teach One

Worldwide, adult literacy can greatly contribute to a lower quality of life. That’s why organizations like ProLiteracy exist.

Laubach Literacy International began in 1930, when Dr. Frank C. Laubach was a missionary among the Maranao people of the Philippines. His concern about their poor living conditions led him to conclude that the ability to read and write was essential for them to begin to solve their problems. As the Maranaos learned to read, they would, in turn, teach other adults on a one-to-one basis that became known as “Each One, Teach One.” From 1935 to 1967, Dr. Laubach visited 105 countries answering calls for literacy help and created reading lessons in 315 languages.

In 2002, Laubach Literacy International merged with another of the world’s oldest and largest adult literacy organizations, Literacy Volunteers of America, to create ProLiteracy. Learn more about ProLiteracy and how you can contribute at https://www.proliteracy.org/About-Us/Mission-History!
