HARBOR IN GOOD

Free Brown Wooden Dock Stock Photo

I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.

My tongue, every atom of my blood,
form’d from this soil, this air,
Born here of parents born here from parents
the same, and their parents the same,
I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin,
Hoping to cease not till death.

Creeds and schools in abeyance,
Retiring back a while sufficed at what
they are, but never forgotten,
I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard,
Nature without check with original energy.

—Walt Whitman, Song of Myself

GOD UNROLLS THE CANVAS

My life is but a weaving
Between my Lord and me;
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.
Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.
Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

WE ARE ALL REBORN

It’s okay
if you’re burning
with anger
or sadness
or both
it is necessary
for you to collapse
so you can learn
how phoenixes are reborn
when they burn
and rise again
from the ashes of
their existence

—Noor Unnahar

Courage Takes Many Forms

Courage does not always roar.
Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”

—Mary Anne Radmacher

LIFE IS SHORT: BE KIND

Life is short and we have not too much
time for gladdening the hearts of those
who are traveling the dark way with us.
Oh, be swift to love! Make haste to be kind.

INFINITE PEACE TO YOU

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.

—Gaelic Blessing

Sometimes it seems when I’m talking to people about prayer
that one of the main points I have to keep making
over and over is there is no right way.
The important thing is to find your way…
You don’t need any kind of noble or
highfalutin‘ or serious reason.
Any reason to begin a pattern of prayer is a good
reason because prayer is about everyday life.

ENTER INTO SOUL LIGHT

Step into the Sunlight
Feel the pain wash away
Enter in the Soul-light
Just BE in today.

Forget all emotion
Put your trust in the day
Let the past rush on by you
Put your Self in THE WAY.

—Lynne Milum

YOUR LIFE IS A PRAYER

When I am liberated by silence,
when I am no longer involved
in the measurement of life, but in the living of it,
I can discover a form of prayer in which
there is effectively no distraction.
My whole life becomes a prayer.
My whole silence is full of prayer.
The world of silence in which I am immersed
contributes to my prayer.

MAKE USE OF EACH PRECIOUS DAY

This life, you must know
as the tiny splash of a raindrop:

A thing of beauty that disappears as it comes into being.

Therefore, set your goal.
Make use of every day and every night.

—Tsongkhapa

DON’T WAIT. BE HERE NOW.

There is only one time

LEARN TO LOOK AT YOURSELF

Love means to learn to look at yourself
The way one looks at distant things
For you are only one thing among many.
And whoever sees that way heals his heart,
Without knowing it, from various ills

FOR EVERY CARE, A PROMISE

May God give you
For every storm, a rainbow
For each tear, a smile
For every care, a promise
And a blessing in each trial.
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.
May the blessing of God’s soft rain be on you.

—From Irish Oral Tradition

THE BUDDHA’S GUIDE TO GRATITUDE

Give thanks
For what has been given to you,
However little.
Be pure, never falter.

—Buddha

SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND

Ask, and it shall be given you;
Seek, and you shall find;
Knock, and it shall be opened to you.
For whoever asks, receives;
And he who seeks, finds;
And to him who knocks, the door is opened.

—Matthew 7:7

ALL LIFE IS BOUND TOGETHER

Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web,
we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.

Take the Harder Road to Happiness

It isn’t always easy to be positive, especially when life takes a painful turn. Experiencing unexpected change can make it easy to turn to anger or frustration. Pushing past those immediate feelings to reach a better place can feel impossible. But it’s not. And we all have those days, and it can feel as if they will consume us. But once you find yourself coming back to a better, brighter place (and we all do this at our own pace), the end result of capturing one’s lost joy cannot be beat.

Positivity has an uncanny ability to affect us both physically and mentally. Keeping a positive attitude keeps our heart healthy, our blood pressure down, and our immune systems strong. But more than that, it keeps our minds sharp and open to possibility. When we look on the bright side no matter what hand we’ve been dealt, we put forth beautiful energy into the universe—it may come back when we need it, or go to someone else who needs it now. Nonetheless, while happiness is the harder endeavor, it is always the most worthwhile.

a shadow.”

activist, and lecturer who lost her sight and hearing after a
bout of illness at the age of nineteen months

“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

rights activist

“The little things” are not so little—especially not to some. Minimal action items such as holding the door for someone or letting someone go ahead of you in line can mean the world to them. We live in a world of connected chaos: We are always reachable and always on the go. In the midst of all of this rushing around, we can forget the feelings of those around us. A simple gesture is just that: simple, yet it can be quite impactful and make a difference to you as well as to others.

In the beautiful paradise known as the Hawaiian Islands, there is a tradition of “Living Aloha.”

This phrase can mean love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, pity, kindness, or grace. It is the coordination of mind and heart within each person—it brings each person to the core of their inner self. Each person must think and express good feelings to others.

Spreading positivity to those around you as well as reminding yourself about all you have to be grateful for is a practice that costs nothing yet has incredible value. It allows you to feed your soul as well as others who may need it.
